Privacy Policy

Effective 25 June 2026

1. Who is responsible

Margin Learning is responsible for personal information processed through Margin under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (POPIA). Privacy and Information Officer enquiries can be sent to support@mrgn.co.za.

2. Information we collect

  • Account information: name, email, verified phone number, authentication identifiers, grade, curriculum and subject preferences.
  • Study content: photos, documents, extracted text, notes, prompts, generated explanations and practice activity.
  • Service information: subscription and purchase identifiers from RevenueCat and Apple, feature counters, timestamps, device/app version, push token, security events, diagnostics, and messages you send support.

3. Why we use it

We use information to authenticate users; provide capture, study, organisation and cloud features; verify purchases and enforce limits; send requested service notifications; prevent abuse; provide support; comply with law; and understand service reliability through limited diagnostics. Legal bases include performing our agreement, consent where required, legal duties, and legitimate interests in securing and improving Margin.

4. Providers and international processing

We use providers including Google Firebase for authentication, database, storage and server functions; Apple and Google for optional sign-in; Apple and RevenueCat for subscriptions; Google and OpenAI APIs for requested automated analysis; Expo for application services and notifications; and hosting/support providers.

These providers process limited data under applicable platform terms or our instructions. Data may be processed outside South Africa using reasonable contractual and technical safeguards. We do not sell personal information or use it for third-party behavioural advertising.

5. Automated analysis

When you request analysis, relevant images, extracted text, prompts and necessary study context are sent to an automated-model provider to return the result. Do not submit information you do not want processed this way. We do not permit these requests to be used for advertising.

6. Retention and deletion

We retain account and study data while your account is active and as needed to provide Margin. Account deletion removes active account records and user storage promptly. Limited records may remain for tax, payment reconciliation, security, fraud prevention, legal claims or technically limited backup cycles. Apple and RevenueCat may retain transaction records under their own duties. Deletion does not cancel an Apple subscription.

7. Security

We use authenticated access, per-user database and storage rules, server-side purchase verification and usage enforcement, encrypted transport, restricted administrative credentials and data minimisation. No online service can guarantee absolute security.

8. Your rights

Subject to law, you may request access or correction, object to or restrict processing, withdraw consent, request deletion, or complain. We may verify identity before acting. Use Account settings or email support. You may also contact South Africa’s Information Regulator.

9. Children and learners

Margin is an educational service used by school learners across a range of ages, including younger children, under the authorisation and supervision of a parent, legal guardian or school. Where the law requires consent for processing a child’s personal information, that consent must be provided by a parent, guardian or authorised school before the learner uses Margin.

We practise data minimisation, collect only what is reasonably necessary for the educational service, and do not knowingly use a child’s information for behavioural advertising, unrelated profiling or sale. A parent, guardian or authorised school may review, correct, restrict or request deletion of a learner’s information, or withdraw authorisation, by contacting support@mrgn.co.za.

10. Changes and contact

Material updates will be highlighted in the app or by email. The effective date identifies the current version. Contact support@mrgn.co.za for privacy requests.
